Turns Out, Thursday Isn't The New Friday

Seeing as I just moved to LA and have finally found myself actually "living" in my apartment (as opposed to traveling for work), I thought it was due time to begin exploring what's around here. I decided to enlist two of my girlfriends, who are also fairly new to West LA, and off we went.

We started our night at The Arsenal. I did a bit of research and found out on WalkScore that it was less than a mile away. After reading some reviews on Yelp, I thought it was a safe bet. Overall, the place had 3 1/2 of 5 stars or something. Their website was pretty entertaining, too. So, I let the gals know we're heading to The Arsenal and recite the reviews as though they are my own. Ok, cool - SOLD!

Parking the car was painless, which can mean one of two things: this place is lame or the universe is telling us to come here. The former ended up being accurate. The bar itself is trendy and clean, with modern furniture and a covered smoking patio. Not that I'm a smoker or anything. I'm just sayin'. The bartender was a nice guy, too. Unfortunately, the music was bad and there was no one there. It was confusing. I thought it would be busy on a Thursday night. Maybe the DJ scared everyone off. Who knows. Either way, it was time to go to the next place...

The next location was again my idea. This time I chose Brennan's. It wasn't midnight yet, so I definitely thought we'd get to see at least one Turtle Race.
and they are off!
To my dismay, not only did we miss the final race of the night, but the bouncers were mean and treated us pretty badly. Odd. Additionally, there were daggers being thrown at us from all angles simply because we were somewhat dressed up when it was obviously a sweater and jeans spot. Whoops. I apologize for my cute clothes. At this point, I was 0-2 and wanted someone else to choose the final spot, since it was nearing last call. [insert complaints about California's 2am closing time here]

Thankfully, one of my friends suggested the Huntley and that ended up being okay. It was still a bit dead, but we at least met some interesting blokes from Australia who made us laugh. It was my first time at the Huntley Penthouse, so I thoroughly enjoyed the people watching. It must've been date night because everyone was coupled up there. Cute.

That was my Thursday night. Quite a mix of venues, huh? I bet The Arsenal is fun on the weekend. Maybe it was just an off night. I have every intention of going back. I might even return to Brennan's for the first turtle race of the night next Thursday. Having a good time at a place has so much to do with timing. Kinda like relationships. Don't worry, I'm not gonna get on that tangent.

Now that it's Friday, I feel that I need to make up for last night's short comings. I plan to hit a housewarming party, then who knows where I'll end up next. Tell you tomorrow.

Thirsty Thursday is more of a college town deal. Seeing as a lot of colleges of business don't have classes on Fridays, and business majors are about 60% of the alcoholics in college, they drink whenever possible. In a larger town, the bars closer to campus will usually be livelier, but the bars that aren't frequent college hangouts won't be nearly as active.

yeah, buy this bar is only about a mile from UCLA so I thought there would definitely be people out. weird, right?

Depends on the price, if the cover's too high, and the drinks are going above $5 a pop, the poor college kids won't blow their money their. Sometimes a bar just isn't a Thursday night bar. If you've only lived in the area for a few months, it'll take you a while to get a real feel for the nightlife.

And just because a bar isn't packed, doesn't mean it's not a quality venue. There's a couple bars in Seattle that never have that big of a crowd, but I make a point of stopping at them because they've got good drinks, good music, and a good vibe.
