Google Me Not

Ok, I know it's a little narcissistic, but I Google myself sometimes. I need to know what's "out there", even if no one else is looking. Today, I did a Google search on my maiden name and came across my Spokeo.com profile. Since I've never created a Spokeo account, I dug deeper.

Spokeo.com is an online directory that creates a listing for people based upon whatever public information they are able to gather.

Taken from the Spokeo website:

"Spokeo aggregates publicly available information from phone books, social networks, marketing surveys, real estate listings, and other public sources. This third-party data is then indexed through methods similar to those used by Google or Bing to create a listing. Because Spokeo only collects this data and does not create it, we cannot fully guarantee its accuracy."

The scariest part about the listing is that your physical address is provided with a Google Maps street view of your apartment or house! Spooky. Talk about a stalker's paradise.

Although, it's not exactly easy to find, there is a way to remove your listing. To save you the trouble of finding the info, I've provided instructions below.

Here's how you do it:

1. Locate the listing to remove (for name listings, please select the state, city, then exact profile match)
2. Copy the URL (the URL can be found on the top of your browser and should look something like “http://www.spokeo.com/search?q=Smith%20Sample#Sample:1219812367″)
3. Go to www.spokeo.com/privacy
4. Paste the URL
5. Provide your email address (this acts as a verification process for the confirmation to be sent to your Inbox) and Captcha Code (Image Verification Code)
6. Check you Inbox for the confirmation email, and click on the link on the bottom to complete the removal process.
7. The directory listing will become flagged and will be removed within 1 business day.

You're welcome! :)
